Starfleet Intelligence is a branch of Starfleet responsible for gathering and analyzing information concerning neighboring powers in the galaxy, and for carrying out covert investigations regarding possible threats to Earth and, later, the Federation. Starfleet Intelligence employs agents for their field operations who are authorized to perform undercover investigations. These agents are sometimes embedded among starship crews as seemingly ordinary officers. Starfleet Intelligence agents (or "SI agents") report to division heads who oversee their agents' missions. The head of the organization is known as the Chief of Starfleet Intelligence, followed by the Deputy Chief of Starfleet Intelligence.

Starfeet Intelligence was first mentioned in the original series episodes "Journey to Babel" and "The Enterprise Incident." It has also been used as a plot device across the various series and movies including The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise, Lower Decks, and Star Trek Nemesis. According to several novels, including The Lost Era series of novels, Uhura was recruited for Starfleet Intelligence shortly after the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, eventually rising to the rank of admiral and serving as head of Intelligence.
