Lissi Arna ~ This is a vintage original cigarette card form the series Goldfilm from Salem Cigarettes. Issued in about 1934. This is card #40. It is smaller than a traditional US baseball card (about 1½quot;x2¼"). This particular example is in very good condition.
A beautiful, exotic-looking German silent and early sound era screen actress, Lissi Arna (born Elisabeth Arndt) became a star opposite the popular Harry Piel. Usually cast as fallen women, Arna became associated with director William Dieterle, who brought her with him to Hollywood in 1930. Highly publicized as the newest European import, she was contracted by RKO and played William Boyd's German fiancée in the World War I melodrama Beyond Victory (1931). The film was an obvious attempt at duplicating the success of Universal's antiwar statement All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) but fell far short of such lofty expectations and did little for Arna, whose role was apparently severely cut prior to release. She returned to Germany and continued to make films until the beginning of World War II. Of particular note was her portrayal of Pia opposite Luis Trenker in Karl Hartl's classic mountain film Berge in Flammen (1931) aka Mountains on Fire. Eventually, she married a physician, and later relocated to Venezuela. The former star died of cancer in Berlin.
