Emil Jannings ~ Very nice vintage photo from about 1934. This is a real photo card from Ross Publishers in Germany. It was a cigarette mail-in premium. The photo measures about 5" x 7". This particular example is in excellent condition (about very fine) especially for a photo that is over 70 years old. The back is blank.
Discovered by Max Reinhardt, Jannings' fame was established during the Weimar regime. An international star, Jannings made his first American films, Way of All Flesh and The Last Command, in 1927 and 1928, winning the best-actor Oscar in 1928. Despite claiming to have been born in Brooklyn, Jannings was thoroughly German. Returning to Germany, he starred in The Blue Angel (1930). Powerfully built with an enormous stage presence, he continued working in starring roles, such as Robert Koch (1939) and Ohm Krüger (1941). He was made a Reichskultursenator, decorated by Goebbels in 1938, and named Artist of the State in 1941. He played the role of Bismarck in the Nazi epic Die Entlassung (1942). After the war, Jannings was black-listed because of his Nazi connections.
