Sammy Dunn was a native of Bessemer, Alabama, and a graduate of Fairfield High School. He played baseball at and graduated from Jefferson State Community College and received his Masters Degree from Montevallo. Sammy was the Assistant Principal at Vestavia Hills High School and the Head Baseball Coach there from 1978 until his untimely death in 2004. Dunn lead their Class 6A Baseball team to eleven State Championships and One National Championship. He was named The National Baseball Coach of the Year three times, 1998, 1999, and 2004. He received the Frank House Award at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, was inducted into the Montevallo Sports Hall of Fame and then the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in March of 2004. The Rebels also four claimed countless area and tournament titles and sent scores of players into collegiate and professional baseball under Dunn who also served on the 1984 Baseball Olympic Selection Committee, as director of the Southern States Conference Baseball Tournament, hosted a multitude of coaching clinics, and served as the Alabama High School Athletic Association's District Representative.
