Gustav Fröhlich and Brigitte Horney ~ This is a cigarette card from the Bunte Filmbilder cigarette card series. It was published in 1936. It is card #93. Size: just over 2¼" x 2¾" (much larger than a typical US or British cigarette card). Very light wear. Overall the condition is very fine.

Genuine vintage cigarette card from 1936 features one of the stars of Fritz Lang's science fiction masterpiece, Metropolis.

Gustav Fröhlich - Journalist turned actor, Fröhlich played the lead in scores of German films beginning in 1925. He is perhaps best known as the upper-class young man who abandons his life of luxury to join the workers in Fritz Lang's science fiction classic Metropolis (1926) in which he stars with Brigitte Helm (Maria). Unlike Helm, he made at least eleven films for the Nazi screen including Minor Love and the Real Thing (1938) and The Great King (1942). Bunte Filmbilder #270 from Lloyd Cigarettes, 1937, VG/F. Card is shown larger than actual size but the size you see it depends on your screen resolution. Gustav is particularly dapper in this large format gilt-edged card.

Brigitte Horney conquered the German film world of the 1930s with her unique erotic charisma. She began her career as a dancer studying under the legendary Mary Wigman. At the same time, she took acting lessons from Ilka Grüning. After winning the Max-Reinhardt up-and-coming prize, Robert Siodmak cast her in the film Abschied (1930). Despite early success, Brigitte turned down a UFA contract in order to work on the stage. This didn't mean that she didn't make any more films. She appeared in the 1938 film You and Me with Joachim Gottschalk and the two had the kind of screen magic that studios dream of. They made several successful films together including Aufruhr in Damaskus (1939), Eine Frau wie Du (1939) and Das Mädchen von Fanö (1940). Unfortunately, in 1941, Joseph Goebbels insisted that Gottschalk leave his Jewish wife in order to continue his film career. Gottschalk, his wife, and their son Michael gassed themselves. Brigitte continued to act, even after the war, but her roles never came up to the level that they had reached with Gottschalk. She is best remembered for her role as Empress Katherine the Great in the 1943 version of the UFA film version of Baron Munchhausen, directed by Josef von Báky, with Hans Albers in the title role
