Gustaf Grundgens ~ Very nice vintage cigarette card from 1936. Card is #68 in the Bunte Filmbilder series. It measures about 2¼" x 2¾". This particular example is in excellent condition (about very fine) especially for a card that is over 75 years old.
Gustaf Gründgens - Nazi Germany's most popular and best known stage actor as well as the director of the Prussian State Theater in Berlin. Also known as Gustav. Befriended and protected by Reichsmarshall Hermann Goering, Gründgens prospered despite earlier connections to the Communists. A legislative quirk gave Goering control over the Prussian State Theater to the chagrin of Goebbels who controlled the rest of the arts in Germany. Gustaf Gründgens won acclaim as Mephistopheles in Goethe's Faust during the 1931-1932 season and portrayed the chief gangster in Fritz Lang's first sound film, M. Under the Third Reich he appeared in several anti-British films. In 1981, he was the subject of the film Mephisto. The films listed here are primarily those made under the Reich.
